West Indies: Gayle, Chanderpaul, Sarwan out of ODIs

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has decided to rebuild a team for future as it has axed former skipper Chris Gayle and veteran middle order batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan from the One Day International series against Pakistan.

The WICB said in a statement issued here Thursday that in a bid to help develop young players, the trio has been rested from the first two of the five One Day Internationals.
The move was widely expected as the top West Indian cricketers have failed to perform in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 while serious discipline issues have also marred the general image of the West Indian cricket in the past few years.
The trio, who are in their 30s, can be axed for good as the West Indian selectors are in a state of mind to hand Darren Sammy a young pool of players to nurture and develop into a formidable side. Despite of the fact that the trio has scored the best part of runs in the past five years or so the move by the WICB is certainly focussing on a long-term solution for the Caribbean cricket.
Ernest Hilaire, chief executive of the board, said in the statement that the main purpose behind axing of the trio was to give youngsters the chance to prove their mettle in the international cricket so that West Indies cricket team perform well in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
“With a view to the stated goal of winning the 2015 Cricket World Cup, in the 2011-2012 phase the Selection Committee will expose players to international cricket who could potentially play a vital role in the 2015 Cricket World Cup campaign,” Hilaire stated.
As far as the squad is concerned, Anthony Martin, a leg-spinner from Antigua, has been given the chance to face a Pakistani side which is renowned for handling spinners well.
